WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?
It is the skill of being deliberately attentive to one’s
life experience as it unfolds without judgment or
commentary. It involves a moment-by-moment awareness of our
experiences.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF BECOMING MINDFUL?
The chief goal is awareness. It is about learning to
control our minds and thoughts, which is the secret to a
good life.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MINDFULNESS?
- Stress Relief: increased calmness, physical relaxation,
coping skills, lessens emotional reactions, increases
self-control, objectivity, and tolerance.
- Spiritually: can be a resource for clarity, insight, and
a feeling of connection with a higher power or spirit,
increases the ability to relate to others and one’s self
with kindness, acceptance, and compassion.
- Physical Health: to improve or enhance overall wellness,
manage chronic illnesses and pain, be more in tune with your
body and the messages it sends.
- Mental Health: improves emotional intelligence,
cognitive functioning, slows age-related mental decline,
lessens depressive episodes, improves focus, concentration
and mental clarity, can be an aid in recovery from PTSD and
other trauma, cultivates positive thinking, provides healthy
insight into negative emotions, improves psychological
balance.
IS THERE MORE THAN ONE TYPE OF MINDFULNESS?
Mindfulness is a state of mind that is developed through
practice. As we move through each day of our lives, we
experience many things … outer events as they occur,
interactions with other people and our environment, and
thousands of thoughts. Mindfulness can be applied to
everything from walking, eating, driving, our relationships
and communication with others, self-contemplation, and
(importantly) the challenges and difficulties of life.
WHO CAN LEARN MINDFULNESS?
Anyone. People of every age, religion, country and
culture can learn and practice mindfulness.
IS IT DIFFICULT TO LEARN?
It is not difficult, but does take practice to master.
Think of your mind as a tool which you can learn to use
advantageously. Regular practice imprints the skills which
eventually become automatic. After the first introductory
session you have the choice of:
- Continuing to study and practice on your own
- Continuing to receive training in various aspects of
mindfulness on a regular basis
- Continuing to receive training in various aspects of
mindfulness sporadically as your schedule allows
- Return to instruction any time you want to brush up,
have questions, or want to learn something new
HOW IS THE MINDFULNESS TRAINING CUSTOMIZED TO MY NEEDS?
When you register for the first introductory session, you
will be given an information form to complete which help me
make determinations and suggest possibilities you may be
interested in exploring. During the first session, there is
time for any questions and discussion about anything that
needs to be addressed for the first or future sessions.
DOES THE MINDFULNESS TRAINING INVOLVE?
The training consists of specific information, “how to”
advice for the particular aspect we are discussing, guided
practice, written material for future reference, and
feedback time before closing for clarity and concerns.
IS PRIVATE INSTRUCTION BETTER THAN GROUP INSTRUCTION?
No, it’s not better … just a bit different. Private
lessons can be customized to your needs. Group instruction
can be customized to the entire group and has the added
benefit of group input and interaction. Group sessions are
fun and often purchased as packages so that each week or so,
a different aspect of mindfulness is introduced and
practiced.
ISN’T MINDFULNESS AN EASTERN SPIRITUAL PRACTICE?
The practice of mindfulness originated with Buddhism over
2,600 years ago. However, research and long-term studies
conducted over the last 30 years documenting the benefits of
mindfulness training, has helped promote its use in numerous
applications in the U.S. including the work place, schools,
medical facilities, the military, mental health programs,
and by various religions. Mindfulness in itself is not
necessarily a spiritual practice.
